George Washington (1732-1799) was the first president of the United States. In his late teens, he earned valuable experience as a surveyor west of Virginia in Ohio. He fought on the British side during the Seven Years war as a militia officer. When conflict appeared likely with Britain in 1775, Washington appeared in a splendid uniform at meetings and won the part of commander in chief through his leadership and charisma even though he was not the most experienced soldier....
