James Monroe (1758 – 1831) was the fifth President of the United States. As a diplomat, Monroe supported the French Revolution. He played a leading role in the War of 1812 as secretary of war under James Madison. Elected president in 1816, he acquired Florida (1819); and created the Monroe Doctrine. > next President
