Thomas Jefferson (1753-1826) was the third president of the United States. He was the driving force in the compilation of the Declaration of Independence, based on the philosophies of John Locke and Rosseau, among others.  Jefferson achieved distinction as an horticulturist, architect, archaeologist, paleontologist, author, inventor, and as founder of the University of Virginia.
