Herbert
Hoover (1874–1964), was a famous mining engineer who became the 31st
President of the United States. As Commerce Secretary
in the 1920s under Presidents Harding and Coolidge, he promoted
economic modernization. In the presidential election of 1928 Hoover
easily won the Republican nomination. The Geat Depression started in
1929 - the first
year of his presidency. He tried to combat the depression with
volunteer efforts and government
action; neither produced economic recovery during his
