Note: Face paintings replace masks on these mummies, all discovered in the Fayyum, a low-lying agricultural area to the west of the Nile river and date from the 'Roman period' of the 2nd and 3rd centuries  A.D. Life expectancy was relatively low in this multicultural society. Only the well to do could afford such treatment.
