Irene
is one of the great women of history who changed Western
civilization. Crowned sole ruler of the Byzantine Empire in
797, she became the first woman ever to hold the throne of the old
Roman
Empire. This motivated the Frankish king Charlemagne
to have himself crowned emperor of the West by the pope. Up until this
time, Germanic kings regarded the Roman emperor of the
east in Constantinople as symbolic overlord. Born in 752 to a notable
family of Athens, she was against
