The California condor is the largest bird in North America and is endangered but recovering. While down to only a few individuals in the latter 1980's, all of the birds were moved to captivity so that chicks could be raised. Re-introduced into the wild, there are now 273 birds. In 2006, a pair of condors were spotted near Big Sur; in 2007, a condor nest was found in Baja California with an egg. It seems condors might spread throughout the West, their habitat before the 19th Century.
