This mosaic from the Piazza Armerina in Sicily depicts over a wide expanse, the collecting and transport of exotic animals for the arena including giraffes, lions, bulls, and elephants. The owner of the estate also appears in a frame of the mosaic, bearing a resemblance to either the emperor Maximian or possibly Galerius (300-310 A.D.) though it may have belonged to a North African businessman engaged in promoting the games. > next Gladiator |
