This simple black and white mosaic depicts Montanus ("the Mountain") holding a trident. He is said to have been a favorite of the Emperor Commodus (180-192 A.D.)  Commodus on occasion appeared in gladiatorial combats in  the Colisseum in the costume of Hercules, which antagonized his upper class enemies in the Senate.
