The Borghese mosaic c. 300 A.D. (Rome) presents a helmeted gladiator (Astiuus) who has fallen to a youthful, lightly armed gladiator (Astacius), who raises his weapon to strike as he steps on his opponent's fallen shield. The two had been paired for battle, as was the custom. Astiuus had the protective advantage of helmet and shield, but was burdened by the weight of his gear. Astacius was less protected, but had the advantage of mobility. > next Gladiator |
